What you are actually paying for
Editors price by the finished minute because the work scales with the length of the final video, not the raw footage. Three styles cover most YouTube work:
- Clean cut: cutting mistakes and pauses, captions, music, basic colour. The cheapest and fastest.
- Standard: adds B-roll, sound effects, motion graphics and animated titles. What most growing channels need.
- Animated: maps, 3D, explainer animation and simulations built for the video. Far more hours per minute, so priced per project.
Typical price ranges
On freelance marketplaces, basic cuts start at a few dollars per finished minute, standard edits commonly sit around $10–$40 per minute, and custom animation runs from about $45 to well over $100 per minute. Shorts are usually priced per clip.
For reference, launch prices here are $10 per minute for a clean cut, $15 with motion graphics, from $45 for animation, $20–$70 per Short, and $60 per 1,000 words of script, delivered in up to 24 hours. Get a number for your own video with the video price calculator.
What drives the price up
- Animation, maps and 3D.
- Messy footage: many takes, no script, multiple cameras to sync.
- Fast deadlines.
- Many revision rounds.
- Script writing and research on top of the edit.
Should you hire an editor at all?
Most solo creators spend one to three hours per finished minute editing. A weekly 10-minute video can eat 40–80 hours a month. If those hours are worth more than the editor’s price, or editing is what stops you publishing on schedule, hiring pays for itself. The hire-or-DIY calculator puts both numbers side by side.

Roughly $100 for a clean cut and $150–$400 for an edit with motion graphics. Animated videos are quoted per project.
Is it cheaper to pay per video or per hour?
Per finished minute or per video is more predictable for you. Hourly billing makes sense only for open-ended work.
